Edward Durant Floorcloths

The Edward Durant House in Newton, Massachusetts, was built in 1734. Many of the floors in the house were stenciled, circa 1780. The “Edward Durant” designs are some of our favorite Early American floor patterns. The center motifs provide strong images — wreaths and diamonds — yet many delicate pieces make up the whole. The motifs lend themselves to use of multiple colors and markedly different effects can be acheived depending on the whether the color choices are boldly or subtly different. The borders found in the Edward Durant House are particularly lovely. We have experimented extensively with various combinations of the Edward Durant patterns as you can see below. Our [Custom Floorcloth Gallery](/collections/gallery/) includes more examples of these designs.
